Chapter 2
Grant cleared his schedule to accommodate fifteen hours a week away from his business for a month, while hoping to find ways to work while doing community service. He knew that he would have to not only report to his probation officer, but he would also have to work under the officer’s supervision for the entire fifteen hours each week.
He found his way to the plain, unadorned building that housed the offices of the probation officers and walked along the faded tile floor and past many doors with people sitting at metal desks next to windows with shabby blinds and old office chairs. He counted down the numbers on the door until he came to number twelve. The door was closed and he knocked swiftly. He could hear a low throaty chuckle from the other side of the door. It sounded like a woman. It had never occurred to him that his probation officer could be a woman.
He waited while she finished her phone call and came to open the door. As he waited, he envisioned a large, burly woman with sagging pants over a sagging body. He usually didn’t judge people in such a stereotypical way, but perhaps the dowdiness of the building or the images usually portrayed of probation officers caused him to assume that the woman within was nothing to look at. Therefore, he was surprised when she opened the door and stood before him; every inch of her five foot nine inch frame was beautifully contained by her uniform. Her rich, smooth, mocha skin and short black hair accentuated her striking hazel eyes. She didn’t try to hide her curves under her uniform, as if she could, but she didn’t go out of her way to look sexy, either. Her beauty struck him immediately and he found himself speechless for the first time in his life. He'd never been speechless around any woman before.
She saw the beautiful blonde man in the hallway with bronzed skin and blue eyes looking at her as if he were searching for something but had become lost. “May I help you?” she asked in a professional voice. As a woman in a male dominated field, she had to be tough and keep up her guard. Even her voice altered when she was on the job to make sure that she was always taken seriously.
“Ah, yes, ma’am. I’m looking for Officer Smith.” Grant returned her business like tone.
“I’m Officer Jasmine Smith. You must be Mr. Harrington. Do come in.” Jasmine pointed to a seat near her desk. This office was nothing like the other offices he had passed going down the hallway. Jasmine had completely transformed her little office into her own comfortable retreat. If it hadn’t been for the circumstances, even Grant, who was used to fine things, would have been comfortable here.
She had taken down the ugly blinds that the county provided and put up honeycomb blinds with tan curtains. The desk was made of a dark wood. It
